Why You Can’t Be A Part-Time Realtor

Written by: Remington Joseph

For most people, the idea of getting out of the rat race is one that constantly pops into their heads as they work their nine-to-five jobs. It’s at these times, where the idea of a get-rich-quick- button is usually thought of, and a lot of the time, that button comes in the form of a profession as a realtor. Unless you were born with a passion for sales though, nothing besides the money it brings makes being a realtor sound all that attractive, does it? You have other passions you’d like to pursue, and while you might work as a realtor to chase that passion, you’d like to use the rest of your time doing other things. This goal raises the question: Is it possible to become a part time realtor and find success? We’re sorry to have to break this to you, but the answer is no. Here’s a few reasons why.

A Severe Lack Of Time

Despite what we see on TV, being a realtor is a lot more than walking a few eager buyers through a luxury house for an hour or two a day. In fact, it’s practically a job that demands your time around the clock, 24/7. When you work with a client as a realtor, you’re expected to be available to them on evenings, weekends, and even holidays. These are people looking to make one of the most important financial decisions of their lives here, and if you’re working for them, they expect the same level of commitment. If you’re doing something like working a second job, you won’t be able to promise yourself to clients the way they need, and that won’t lead you to closing many deals as a result.

Limited Experience

The world of real estate is complex, and while everyone learns at their own pace, it’s guaranteed to take time for you to learn and grow into a realtor armed with the experience to truly give clients the most value. This process can take years as a full time real estate agent, as even twenty year old industry veterans are continuing to learn new strategies that will help them guide clients through the market. If you’re only allowing yourself a fraction of the time that they put in, it’s going to take you a lot longer before you can even consider putting yourself on the same playing field as a full-time realtor. With so many better options available, it’s going to be hard to present yourself as the best option of any interested buyer or seller.

A Lower Income

Keeping in mind that real estate agents work on a commission-based model, it should be easy to understand that the lack of time, and lack of experience is going to heavily impact the number of deals you end up closing on. The sad truth is that even full-time realtors often struggle when they’re just starting out, as unless you join a team, you’re completely on your own when it comes to generating leads and bringing in income. With even fewer opportunities to make sales, you won’t be able to maintain a consistent income that will give you the stable life you’re likely aiming for.

It may break a few hearts, but working as a realtor isn’t the fast track to success that many people are led to believe it is, especially if you aren’t giving it your full attention. Similar to those looking at the market as an investor, it’s all about your time in real estate. While we can’t promise you financial freedom as a part-time realtor, we can say that putting your time and attention towards the market as an investor can lead to building the wealth that you’ve been dreaming about. Let investing be your exit strategy.
